What Is CoolSculpting?
Coolsculpting is a cosmetic procedure that is used to sculpt a particular area of the body, that has body fat that is otherwise very difficult to shift.
Coolsculpting uses a method called cryolipolysis, which freezes fat in the area being treated. The fat cells then die, and are removed from the body via the natural detoxing system in the liver and kidneys.
When you go for a coolsculpting treatment, they will apply panels, usually made of plastic of metal to the area that you wish to be treated. The panels are then cooled down to between zero and six degrees celsius, and in this way the fat cells are targeted, without affecting the skin and other tissues.
It is said that the area is slightly uncomfortable for five to ten minutes, before it becomes numb and there is no further discomfort, apart from the occasional feeling of tugging or pulling at the treatment site.
Each area being treated takes anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour and a half.
Coolsculpting is both non-surgical, and non-invasive, and there is no recovery time. This means this is a walk in and walk out procedure, and you can carry on your day as normal after a treatment.
What Areas Can Be Treated?
Coolsculpting is made to treat areas of stubborn fat that won’t go, even with exercise and diet.
Coolsculpting is not for all over body fat reduction, nor is it a treatment for obesity.
Any area that you have stubborn areas of body fat can be treated. The most common areas are belly fat, thighs, lower back, upper arms and under the chin.
A coolsculpting treatment for the stomach is one of the most popular treatments. This area of the body is often difficult to shift fat from, no matter how much you diet, and how many sit ups you do.
What Are The Results Like?
The purpose of coolsculpting is to quite literally freeze and kill the fat cells. Therefore, those specific fat cells that have been targeted can not return, so in this way, the results of coolsculpting are permanent.
However, should you gain weight after having the treatment, then body fat can return to that problem area, so it is important to monitor your weight after having the procedure performed.
Coolsculpting should not be considered a quick fix, and the results are not as dramatic as something like liposuction.
Fat reduction is usually around 20 – 25% in the area being treated. As the body has to rid itself of the fat cells naturally, results are normally seen within a month, but the final result may not be obvious until six months down the line.
Are There Any Side Effects?
As with any cosmetic procedure, there are some side effects to be aware of, although coolsculpting is considered very safe due to its non-invasive and non-surgical methods.
Immediately after having a coolsculpting treatment, you can expect to have some redness and soreness at the site, but this usually resolves within a day or two.
Bruising and slightly swelling is also quite common, and this should resolve within a week of the treatment.
Rarely, a patient may experience a tingling sensation, and sometimes a complete loss of sensation at the treatment site, but this usually resolves within two weeks.
Very rarely, some patients may actually experience an increase of fat cells at the treatment site, which is of course, the exact opposite of what you want to achieve. It is unknown exactly why this happens, and it also seems to happen to male patients more than females, but again, it is not known exactly why.
In these cases, the only option to rid themselves of unwanted body fat in that area, is to have a liposuction procedure carried out.
People with certain medical conditions, and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should not have a coolsculpting treatment.
If coolsculpting is something that you are interested in, then make sure you find a reputable clinic, with a doctor who is experienced in the procedure.
Ensure you have a thorough consultation beforehand, so you are fully aware of the risks, and what results you can expect to achieve.
